Crit Lab Love
Report on my class at International Center for Photography (ICP), “Crit Lab”
My latest class at International Center for Photography (ICP) is called “Crit Lab” and is ICP's version of a master class where we critique and are critiqued by our peers, facilitated by our instructor, D'Angelo Lovell Williams who brings a great vibe to the class.
Very often, when I’m talking in a group of people, I need to decompress the next day, and I did not feel that here. I think the focus on photography—which made the three hours of class time fly by—was really rewarding.
I get two things out of this class:
1) I find that when sharing work in a positive critical environment is a gateway to thinking harder about it yourself - seeing new things as your thoughts bounce off of others’ comments.
2) Being in a position to listen to others talk about their work and thinking about it yourself is eye opening. I particularly love seeing what others bring to the table in terms of their unique perspective and what they’re trying to accomplish.
While I’m not sure if this class is premature on my personal MFA journey, I definitely know that my work will be better for it.
